As women over 40, we've mastered a lot of life's challenges. We've juggled all the things. Our careers, families, and personal growth have all been handled with grace and resilience. But there's one unexpected hurdle that can sneak up on us: overthinking. Chiiiiiile, it's like a houseguest that's worn out their welcome. Just nagging ang hanging around. All in the fridge drinking the juice.
Overthinking can be a real buzzkill, stealing our joy and preventing us from living the life we truly deserve. Lives that allow us to be fully present. In order for us to reclaim our peace of mind and show up fully present, we've gotta break free from the endless loop of intrusive thoughts.
Here are a few tips to help you reshape your thinking:
Challenge your thoughts: When you find yourself caught in a loop of negative thoughts, question their validity. Are they based on facts or assumptions? Ask yourself, out loud, "is this true?" Well, is it?
Practice mindfulness: Techniques like meditation and deep breathing can help you focus on the present moment and reduce overthinking. Breathe in for a count of 3-4, hold it for a count of 3-4, and exhale for a count of 3-4. And I mean blow hard when you exhale. Let that thang out.
Set boundaries: Learn to say no to commitments that drain your energy and create mental space for yourself. Boundaries allow you to be fully present for the things you say yes to.
Seek support: Talk to a therapist about what you're going through. Sharing your feelings can provide relief from the heaviness you're carrying. Your therapist will be there to provide new perspectives and teach valuable coping strategies that your friends and family didn't go to school for years to learn.
Celebrate small wins: Acknowledge your accomplishments, no matter how small, to boost your confidence and shift your focus. It's a big deal, because no one knows what it took for you to get that win. Little wins lead to big wins.
Remember, you're not alone in this journey. Many women over 40 experience similar challenges. By implementing these strategies and practicing self-compassion, you can overcome overthinking and live a more fulfilling life.
